Sydenham Church Health Expo
19th July 2018
On Sunday 15 July 2018 Sydenham Seventh-day Adventist church held its first Health Expo in Home Park, Sydenham High Road. The day was fully supported by Sydenham and Downham's minister, Pastor Otis Lewis and Area 6B Coordinator Eunice Whyteeve.
The concept arose from eight fundamental principles. These principles have been scientifically proven to help achieve optimal health: nutrition, exercise, water, sunlight, temperance, air, rest and trust. Promoting the above, the goal was to impact the health and wellbeing of individuals living in the Sydenham community. Appropriately fitting, the day began with plenty of sunshine and the team of over 15 volunteers ensured there was a calm and friendly atmosphere.
The team included 2 medical doctors and a diabetes specialist nurse, all of whom offered checks and consultations consisting of blood pressure readings, height measurements, weight count, body mass index checks, blood sugar, cholesterol, and peak flow checks. Community members received the undivided attention of the medical team as they provided vital health advice along with free gift bags containing books and pamphlets about health-related issues.
Representatives from the Metropolitan police also joined in the event. They were visibly impressed by the team effort and community spirit, which showcased the positive impact a simple yet important topic like Health can have on the community.
Notwithstanding this, the guests of honour, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Lewisham attended. Both spoke passionately about the necessity for community events like the Health Expo and acknowledged the team for their good work. Going into more depth, the Mayor commended the team for demonstrating faith in action before stating interest in attending future events. Subsequently, they visited each stand to undertake their own health checks and tests.
Prior to leaving they received a juice taster from the Nutrition team, who throughout the day had been carrying out several juicing demonstrations, for the purpose of highlighting and explaining the benefits of juicing and the different combinations to try.
The Health Expo was organised by church members, volunteers, friends, and families who were committed to working together, including Janet Buchanan and Loris Douglas. Community members who attended the Health Expo left informed and motivated to make positive lifestyle changes. An added bonus was that the foundations were laid to build good relationships with those in the community. Based on the feedback received from the attendees, the Health Ministries team have decided to hold another Health Expo in the next few months.
